Soloists
Copenhagen Opera Festival is proud to present a distinguished and exicitng group of opera singers and other artists at this year's festival – from international stars to up-and-coming young Danish and Scandinavian talents.
Al Agami – Maria de Buenos Aires
Al Agami is an African rapper and actor currently residing in Denmark. He debuted as a solo artist with the album “Covert Operations” in 1993 that earned him a Danish Grammy. Since then, Al Agami has appeared on many different recordings and in several Danish TV series and movies.
Alexander Nohr – Dido & Aeneas
Norwegian baritone Alexander Nohr graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Music and the Royal Danish Opera Academy in 2011/12. He has sung with the Odense Symphony Orchestra, and together with other students from the Conservatory has performed works by Ibert, Jacobi and Piazzolla at several Wednesday’s Concerts (“Onsdagskoncerter”).
Andrea Pellegrini – Maria de Buenos Aires
Andrea Pellegrini has established herself as one of the country’s most sought-after mezzo-sopranos on both the opera and the concert stage in the course of just a few years. At the Royal Danish Opera and the Danish National Opera, she has been lauded for performances such as Rosina in ”The Barber of Seville” and Zaida in ”Il Turco in Italia”, both by Rossini, and for Mozart roles such as Annius in ”La Clemenza di Tito”, Cherubino i ”Le Nozze di Figaro” and Idamante in ”Idomeneo”.
Angelo Manzotti – Farinelli at Rosenborg Castle
Angelo Manzotti – Countertenor: the Italian counter-tenor began singing in the falsetto register at the age of twelve. He studied at the Accademia Rossiniana in Pesaro, making his debut in 1989 at Pesaro’s Rossini Opera Festival. He has developed a special technique where only the front parts of the vocal cords vibrate, and in this way he is able to avoid using the falsetto, instead obtaining a clear voice and a vocal range remarkably similar to a woman's.
Annemette Pødenphandt – Opera on death’s door
Elisabeth Holmertz – Dido & Aeneas
The Swedish soprano’s repertoire stretches from the Middle Ages through Baroque, folk, romantic and much more to contemporary music. She made her debut as an opera singer in 2005 in the title role in Henrik Hellstenius' chamber opera "Ophelia: Death by Water Singing" and she has since sung as soloist with the most prominent orchestras in Scandinavia - including the DR Radio Concert Orchestra and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.
Erlend Tyrmi – Serenade Service, Serenade Concert
The Norwegian baritone Erlend Tyrmi lives in Copenhagen and works freelance, specializing in the early baroque period, Vienna Classicism and early Romanticism. Erlend Tyrmi was educated at the Norwegian Academy of Music, the Royal Danish Music Academy of Music and the Royal Danish Opera Academy. Previous singing roles include Malatesta in "Don Pasquale" and Ben in the KammerOperaen production of "The Telephone”. He has also sung the baritone part in Nielsen's Third Symphony with the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra and Cascada in "The Merry Widow" at the Royal Danish Theatre.
Gudrun Bojesen – Maria de Buenos Aires
After graduating from the Royal Ballet School in Copenhagen Gudrun Bojesen has been a principal dancer at the Royal Danish Ballet since 2001. She is an internationally acclaimed ballerina particularly known for her Bournonville roles that include Hilda in “A Folk Tale”. She has expanded her own technique with bravura dancing, e.g. the pas de deux from “The Nutcracker”, and overcame major technical challenges as the ballerina in “Etudes”.
Guido Paevatalu – Maria de Buenos Aires
Danish baritone Guido Paevatalu received his training from the Royal Danish Opera Academy and debuted in 1982 at the Royal Danish Theatre in the role of Billy Benson in Werle’s opera “The Animal”. He has since sung all the major baritone roles, including Figaro in “The Barber of Seville”, Papageno in “The Magic Flute”, Marcel in “La Bohème”, the title role in “Don Juan” and Beckmesser in “Die Meistersinger of Nuremberg”.
Helle Thun – Opera on death’s door
James Valenti – James Valenti in Tivoli
American tenor James Valenti has been hailed for having a voice of Italianate beauty, for his handsome stage presence, ardent singing and for his elegant musicianship in performances with the leading opera companies of the world. He studied at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia and made his professional debut at the age of 25 as Rodolfo in La boheme at the Rome Opera. Other performances include among many others Alfredo Germont in “La traviata” and Duke of Mantua in “Rigoletto”.
Joachim Knop – The Operetta Boat
The barytone and actor Joachim Knop (b. 1971) is a versatile talent who has appeared in shows as diverse as Tom Waits’ ”The Black Rider”, Fuzzy's children's opera ”The Witch Madam Mortensen and the Fat Turkey”, and Puccini's ”Turandot” at the Malmö Opera. As an actor, Joachim Knop made his debut in ”The boys from Skt. Petri” and has since appeared in the hugely popular films about ”Anja and Viktor”.
Kristin Mulders – Dido & Aeneas
Kristin grew up in Norway, but is currently living in Denmark. The mezzo-soprano started taking singing lessons at the age of 19, and has a repertoire ranging from early Renaissance to modern neoclassical music. She has performed with several major Norwegian and foreign orchestras and has performed soloist roles in several works, including Handel's “Messiah”, Bach's “St. John Passion” and “The Christmas Oratorio”, Mozart and Verdi's “Requiem” and Mendelssohn's “Elijah”.

Leif Aruhn-Solén – Dido & Aeneas
The Swedish tenor Leif Aruhn-Solén is a graduate of the Royal School of Music in Stockholm. He made his debut as Prince Ramiro in Rossini's Cinderella in Stockholm's Royal Opera in 2008. Since then, he has sung Rameau’s “Les Paladins”, Monteverdi's “L'Orfeo”, Mozart's “Zaide” and Count Almaviva in Rossini's “Barber of Seville”.
Martin Hatlo – The lost souls of Three Crowns Sea Fortress
The Norwegian bass-baritone, Martin Hatlo, came to the attention of the classical music scene in his homeland when he won the Arve Tellefsen Honorary Award. He has sung solo parts in a series of church music works, such as Faure’s “Requiem”, Larsson's “Disguised God” and Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio” and “St. John Passion”. In addition, he has had roles in Rossini's “Barber of Seville”, Monteverdi's “Orfeo” and Shostakovich’s “The Tale of the Priest and his Worker, Balda”. In 2009, Hatlo could be seen as Herod in Norwegian composer Asbjørn Arntsen’s “Straight to Bethlehem” at the Agder Theatre. He has already received numerous awards.
Nana Bugge Rasmussen –
Mezzo-soprano Nana Bugge Rasmussen began her vocal training at the age of eight with the children’s choir of the Royal Danish Academy of Music. In 2007, she was accepted at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen.
She works with both lied and opera, and over the past year has formed a solid lied-duo with pianist Frederik Malmqvist. She has worked with Helmut Deutsch, Christa Ludwig and Bo Skovhus. Her many roles include Prince Orlofsky in Johann Strauss’ “Die Fledermaus” and both Octavian (from “Der Rosenkavalier” by Richard Strauss) and Romeo (from “I Capuleti ei Montecchi” by Vincenzo Bellini) at 2009’s opera festival “Oper Oder Spree” in Beeskow, Germany.
Nicole Jordan – Dido & Aeneas
Nicole was born in Trinidad, raised in Canada and now resides in Holland. She has a degree in vocal performance, music psychology and music performance. Nicole has worked with several international chamber orchestras, including The Canadian Chamber Choir, Orpheus Choir of Toronto and The Nathaniel Dett Chorale.
Pernille Madsen – The Magic Flute
Pernille Madsen studied singing at the Institute of Musicology at the University of Copenhagen. A number of engagements with the Royal Danish Opera Chorus gave her experience with opera and Pernille now works with improvised opera, appearing regularly as a soloist in oratorios, cantatas and church concerts.
Regína Unnur Ólafsdóttir – The lost souls of Three Crowns Sea Fortress
The Icelandic soprano Regina Unnur Ólafsdóttir completed her Bachelor of The Reykjavík Academy of Singing and Vocal Arts in Iceland in 2005. She has since studied at the University of Georgia, The Royal Danish Academy of Music and The Complete Vocal Institute in Copenhagen. Regina has been a soloist in several choirs singing concerts in U.S., Canada and all over Europe. In June 2011 Regina sang the French national anthem at a boxing match at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen – a performance that was broadcasted worldwide.
Sofie Elkjær Jensen – The Operetta Boat
Soprano Sofie Elkjær Jensen (b.1985) made her debut in 2010 as Papagena in Mozart's ”The Magic Flute” at The Royal Opera, wjere she also sang Blanche in Poulenc's ”Les Dialogues des Carmélites”. Sofie Elkjær has won acclaim with her flute and soprano duo inDuo – and not least with her appearances at the Copenhagen Opera Festival: In 2009 as Euridice in Monteverdi's ”Orfeo”, in 2010 as Musetta in Puccini's ”La Boheme”, and this year in no less than three events: Opera at Frue Plads, Stand-Up Opera and the Operetta Boat.
Søren Hossy – The Magic Flute
Søren Hossy was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and started as a rock musician in the band Alter Ego. He debuted as a soloist with The Funen Opera in 1996 and was attached to the company as soloist for many years. Søren has since appeared in numerous shows and is active as both oratorio and lied singer. Since 1998, he has been employed as first tenor in the Royal Danish Opera Chorus at Holmen.
Tobias Ørum – The lost souls of Three Crowns Sea Fortress
Tobias Ørum graduated in 2006 from the Royal Danish Academy of Music. Furthermore he has taken masterclasses under guidance of Ernst Häffliger, Reiner Goldberg, Antonio Carangelo and Inga Nielsen and accompanists Malcolm Martineau, Rudolf Jansen and Martin Isepp. Tobias Ørum has participated as a chorister in different contexts – ex. at The Royal Theatre, The Royal Opera and DR Radio Choir. Additionally, he serves as an opera singer and has appeared in concerts, oratorios and productions as "han, den, det" and "Babelstorm". The children's opera ensemble SaltoMortale is one of Tobias' great passions, where he works as a singer and director.
